How It Works

What it looks like during a match

You still referee the match. The app just keeps the routine bookkeeping clear: the setup, the score call, the serving state, and what comes next.

1. Set up the match

Choose the format and lock in the basics

Start by choosing doubles or singles, regular or rally scoring, match length, points to win, and winning margin. Once that is set, the rest of the match follows the rules you picked.

  • Pick doubles or singles.
  • Choose regular side-out or rally scoring.
  • Set the match length, target score, and winning margin.

2. Score each rally

Tap the result and keep watching the court

After each rally, tap `POINT` or `LOSS`. Pickle Ref keeps track of first server, second server, side-outs, and the current score call, so you do not have to rebuild that state yourself.

  • Record the rally with one tap.
  • See who is serving and who is receiving.
  • Keep the call visible without stopping to think it through.

3. Finish the match

See the result without digging through the match

When the match ends, you get the winner, the game scores, and any stats the app can safely calculate from the recorded history.

  • See the winner and final match score.
  • Check the game-by-game breakdown.
  • Review stats when the match history supports them.

4. Use it again

Save the match and start the next one faster

Completed matches stay in history. If you are running the same group again, `Play Again` brings back the settings and players so you only need to confirm the opening setup.

  • Keep completed matches in one place.
  • Look back at the result later.
  • Start again without re-entering the roster.

FAQ

A few common questions

These are the questions people usually stop to think about mid-match, especially if they do not referee every week.

How do you keep score in pickleball?

In regular doubles side-out scoring, the call is the serving team's score, the receiving team's score, and the server number. Only the serving side scores. When serve is lost, it moves to the next server or becomes a side-out.

What does the third number in a pickleball score mean?

It tells you whether the serving side is on its first server or second server in a regular doubles side-out game.

Why does a doubles game start at 0-0-2?

In regular doubles, the starting side gets only one opening serve. That is why the first call is 0-0-2.

What is a side-out in pickleball?

A side-out means serve moves to the other team. In regular doubles, that usually happens after the serving side loses a rally on its second server.

Does Pickle Ref work for rally scoring too?

Yes. Pickle Ref supports regular side-out scoring and rally scoring.
